What’s with the baby hair craze that is currently going on? The baby hair trend was extremely popular in the early 90s and it made a comeback in the late 2010s. The name came from the look of an actual baby's hair or how a baby's hair looks as a new born. The thin hair that appear at the scalp line which are actually signals of the baby's hair that has yet to grow in.
While the trend does appear to be simmering down these days, one question still remains: Does leaving baby hair out on your wig really make a difference? Some feel that wigs which feature baby hair can make the wig look more natural. This is not always the case and it really depends on the original hair type of the person wearing the wig. The odds of an individual with type 4 hair having baby hair is usually very slim to none. False baby hair or laid edges do not actually look natural on a person whose hair is not originally laid that way. The appearance of false baby hair can make silky or straight wigs—that is hair of type 1 or type 2—look more natural as these hair types are naturally more prone to having edges that lay flat or grow out of the scalp in this manner. If wearing wig textures of these hair types, it might look nice to have baby hair. Baby hair can be created by the wig maker or even on your own if you have the experience to do so. If the wig is of a silky straight or body wave texture then wearing baby hair can make the wig look more natural. Wigs with really thin lace or very low amounts of body may look better with baby hair as it can hide the imperfections prominent in these types of wigs. In these cases, the baby hair can help to prevent the wig’s hair line from showing, especially if non-transparent lace is used.
Afro and kinky wigs look best without baby hair. Think of a person with a natural fro growing out of their head.
The hair is often so big that the scalp line doesn’t even show, making baby hair a useless trend when it comes to these wigs. It also brings to mind a line from Beyonce’s “Black Parade" song which goes: “F**k, these laid edges..Imma let it shrivel up (shrivel up).”
