The Truth About Beyonce & Bleaching
The girrrrrrllllls are talkinggggggggg!!!!! For the past week or so, the pop culture crowd has been sounding off about what appeared to be a lighter skin tone on Mrs. Beyonce Knowles-Carter. Beyonce attended the Los Angeles premiere of her new documentary movie, Renaissance: A Film By Beyonce in a long custom chrome silver Versace bustier gown.
She accessorized the gown with long sleeve length evening gloves. There was one aspect that stood out about Beyonce’s look that people would not stop talking about. Her skin appeared to be noticeably lighter than usual. She also wore a platinum silver blonde wig.
Beyonce through the Years
Beyonce has always been a lighter toned woman. A true sense of her skin tone can be seen in her baby photos like the below.
We can see that she has dark colored hair and a fair slightly yellowish tone. During the past two decades, her skin tone has always been a tanned shade of caramel brown.
In other photos from the past, she has looked very tan and in some she has shown off a skin tone that most within the black community would deem as light skinned.
She’s rarely seen with her natural hair color and has always sported a signature honey blonde color with styles ranging from bone straight hair to mermaid crimped hair to her sizzling curly fro look of the 2000s!
Beyonce’s skin tone at her Renaissance Film Premiere was very similar to her skin tone as a baby. If one compares the two, they’ll see that the skin tone is fair and not very tan.
During the 2000s, it’s also likely that Beyonce utilized tanning products or tanning sprays as this beauty aesthetic was pretty popular at the time. This is the time when we often saw Beyonce in darker skin tones. There was even a time when Beyonce was criticized for wearing blackface for a French magazine photo shoot.
Why Beyonce Looked Lighter at her Renaissance Film Premiere
At the Renaissance film premiere, Beyonce was going for the look of a Renaissance Queen. The gown and gloves offered a glistening sheen with specks of light glaring down on different areas of the garments. It can be theorized that there was significant lighting in the surroundings and flashes from cameras that would’ve made it seem as if her skin tone was lighter. Even her friend Kelly Rowland appeared to be lighter than usual at the Los Angeles Renaissance Film Premiere.
This confirms that it was the lighting in the room that made people's skin tones look lighter. Just because a person uses lighting in photos does not mean that they are "trying to be white." All interested individuals should keep in mind that she was never dark skinned as her baby photo shows.
Though Beyonce identifies as black, she does have a mixed ancestry of French, Native American and Spanish due to her mother, Ms. Tina Knowles. There are many people with African ancestry that also have European ancestry. Due to this mixed ancestry, these people may not naturally have the darkest skin tones. It’s important to look at a person’s childhood or baby photo so that one can get a true sense of the actual skin tone.
Is Beyonce Actually Bleaching?
Beyonce is not bleaching her skin. Surely, Beyonce or her beauty practitioners are aware of the dangers of skin bleaching products which often have dangerously high amounts of mercury. Skin bleaching products which may come in the form of creams, lotions or soaps should be avoided at all costs. Key words which indicate that mercury is present in a product are : mercurio, mercurous chloride, calomel, and mercuric. Skin bleaching products can lead to issues with the nervous system, memory problems, irritability, tremors and changes to vision.
Many people on social media were criticizing Beyonce and some even went as far as to say that she was trying to change in order to look more white. This really does not seem to be the case as Beyonce has always been fair skinned as a baby and child. During the years where she appeared darker, she was likely tanning. As a member of the black community, Beyonce has shown great appreciation for her cultural and racial identity dedicating songs to black female empowerment and always giving back to the community.
Let’s continue to uplift Beyonce and cherish her while she’s here. She’s worked super hard for all that she has and is committed to evolving as a human being. We know that Beyonce loves being black and would never try to be something that she is not. She has always remained true to who she is. As famous as she is, she makes it a mission to stay down to earth by keeping what truly matters as a focal point as can be seen in a more intimate manner during the Renaissance Film.
