Baby Hair Crazy?!

Wigs provide an abundance of options for individuals to sport a variety of styles that they may not originally be able to do with their own hair.  With all of the different types of wigs available within the hair industry, it can be hard to choose between wig types such as an HD lace front or a crochet style wig.  Then there is the pervasive question that some wig wearers may have: “Should I wear this wig with baby hair?”

What’s with the baby hair craze that is currently going on? The baby hair trend was extremely popular in the early 90s and it made a comeback in the late 2010s. The name came from the look of an actual baby's hair or how a baby's hair looks as a new born. The thin hair that appear at the scalp line which are actually signals of the baby's hair that has yet to grow in.

While the trend does appear to be simmering down these days, one question still remains: Does leaving baby hair out on your wig really make a difference?  Some feel that wigs which feature baby hair can make the wig look more natural.  This is not always the case and it really depends on the original hair type of the person wearing the wig.  The odds of an individual with type 4 hair having baby hair is usually very slim to none.  False baby hair or laid edges do not actually look natural on a person whose hair is not originally laid that way.  The appearance of false baby hair can make silky or straight wigs—that is hair of type 1 or type 2—look more natural as these hair types are naturally more prone to having edges that lay flat or grow out of the scalp in this manner.  If wearing wig textures of these hair types, it might look nice to have baby hair. Baby hair can be created by the wig maker or even on your own if you have the experience to do so.  Wigs which feature natural or kinky hair types like those featured on Essencewigs.com do not require baby hair because these wig options are so realistic to hair types that black women naturally have.  In such a case, the individual’s own hairline is suffice as it matches closely to the texture of this wig.  Take for instance, our most popular unit—The Bohemian Vibe wig.

This wig does not look too great with “laid edges” or falsely created edges.  If your hair is naturally of a type 4, then the wig will look best with your own edges showing if you desire to.  That’s the beauty of our many afro kinky wigs!

To sum, wearing baby hair or falsely created edges depends on the hair texture of wig being worn, the thickness of the lace or even the type of wig cap.  If the wig possesses a full cap, there is no need to wear or create baby hair on it.  It doesn’t make or break the look of the wig.  If the wig is of a silky straight or body wave texture then wearing baby hair can make the wig look more natural.  Wigs with really thin lace or very low amounts of body may look better with baby hair as it can hide the imperfections prominent in these types of wigs.  In these cases, the baby hair can help to prevent the wig’s hair line from showing, especially if non-transparent lace is used.

Afro and kinky wigs look best without baby hair.   Think of a person with a natural fro growing out of their head.

The hair is often so big that the scalp line doesn’t even show, making baby hair a useless trend when it comes to these wigs.  It also brings to mind a line from Beyonce’s “Black Parade" song which goes: “F**k, these laid edges..Imma let it shrivel up (shrivel up).”

We’re totally on par with that! We want kinks !  We’re not trying to lay them straight.

Meta Gala 2025: What Will be The Feminine Take on Black Dandyism?

Celebrities, designers and fashion's most influential will be convening at the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, May 5th.  This year's theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.  The period of the Black Dandy spanned over two hundred years, beginning in the 1700s and continuing on until the civil rights era.  During the period, men of African descent used fashion and style as a form of expression and as a way to reclaim their dignity, after having endured years of racial oppression, rejection, misrepresentation and emasculation.  Black Dandyism was also a way to make political statements while transforming struggle into poise and power.  There isn't a better moment in time to revive Black Dandyism than now. The form of expression is mostly associated with the male gender. Females that will be in attendance will have a challenge to present a feminine take on Black Dandyism.  The style requires a good measure of class, elegance, and attention to detail.  The mos...

Baby Hair Banned!

Who would have thought that a day would come where a popular hair trend is forced to an end.  If you aren't clear about what hair trend that is, think of those swirly waves that are shaped and molded onto a woman's hairline often with the precision, grace and perfection of an artist creating complex paintings and illustrations in the studio.  We're talking baby hair, curlfriends! Not a Monet, a Picasso or a Van Gogh! The obsession that some women have with baby hair should really be studied on a super grand scale.  Some ladies won't feel that their look is complete if their edges are not laid or slicked.  As a wig store dealing with various clientele, we can attest to the fact that some women take the baby hair trend to a whole nother level.  Having baby hair or "laid edges" means different things to different folks.  Baby hair may look cute when styled correctly but should females become so enmeshed in the baby hair craze?  What happens when an  ...
