Afros have really made a comeback since the 1970s. They're no longer only seen as a prop to complement a Halloween outfit (btw, halloween is in 3 weeks. Place your order by the end of this week to ensure that you receive it in time). At one time, wearing an afro was taboo but thanks to the natural hair movement, individuals have learned to reclaim the beauty that was always there. Around the mid to late 2000s, women began discovering their natural hair and falling in love with it. During this time natural hair vloggers set the stage for millions more around the world to understand what it meant to be a natural.
Fast forward to 2021 and you will see at least one or two afros being sported on a Hollywood red carpet or on a model cat walking down runways of New York and Paris. At one point, afros would never have been a chosen style for a red carpet look but times have changed and design houses are making it a point to showcase beautiful big afros with their designs.
Whitney Peak made an appearance for Chanel at the Met Gala 2021 and looked absolutely mesmerizing!
People have referred to afro textured hair as unkempt or nappy but those derogatory words should never be used to describe this type of hair. Not only are these words inappropriate and wrong; they are contrary to what the hair actually is. In the past, certain industries have influenced beauty standards for society that mostly embraced a Eurocentric look. Beauty standards that fall outside of this norm began to be embraced in the mid 2000s and onward. The movement grew exponentially through the years and thankfully, we now live in a time where afro-centric beauty standards are accepted and viewed as the norm.
Photos like the one of Whitney Peak for Chanel prove that the afro in itself is very elegant and individuals wearing them can exude even more elegance than when they aren't wearing one. Do you know why that is? It's because true elegance embraces a natural most simplistic state of being. Afros are true to reality of women and men with African heritage. This is the hair texture that they were born with. Afros are elegant. Just take a look at the celebrities wearing afro textured hair at this year's Met Gala. There was no shortage of fros.
We saw Lupita in an avant garde Versace gown. Her crowning glory was an amazing afro hair style that completed the look that she was going for. Had she worn a typical hairstyle, this look would not spoke such regal volumes.
One thing Lupita's always going to do on a red carpet is sport an afro or kinky texture in some way, shape or form.
prior to the early 1900s, Black folk didn't even get the chance to be on red carpets and were shunned due to their outward features. as we remember and reflect on this, let's continue to embrace our hair textures even more and learn to accept the beauty that has been with us all the time. afros are beautiful and yes, they are elegant!
