Guinness Record for World's Largest Afro Goes to ...

The Guinness Record for world's largest afro goes to Simone Williams!  Simone broke the previous record which was held by Aevin Douglas.  Simone's afro measured in at 8.07 inches tall and 8.85 inches wide.  her beautiful big afro has a circumference of 4ft 10 inches.

simone confessed of being inspired by aevin douglas in an interview with Guinness world records, stating:

"She inspired me to make the attempt. I googled world's largest afro and when she came up i was in awe."

"at the time, i didn't think my hair was anywhere close to hers. she was goals! but i was so happy to see that she was recognized and there was a chance for others to be recognized to."

simone, who hails from brooklyn ny, has confessed to being a slave to chemical straighteners which she received up until college.  She didn't always know how to care for her natural hair but at 23 years old, she decided to transition to wearing her natural texture.

after a great deal of patience and self education, she began caring for her natural hair.  her five staple products to use in her hair are a sulfate free shampoo, olive oil gel, hibiscus curling cream, conditioner and hair moisturizer.

She's always reveled in the attention she's received wearing an afro commenting:

"when my hair is fully styled and big and voluminous, i get a lot of stares, a lot of comments, lots of compliments--Rocking a natural fro is something that really symbolizes your pride in being black. and i feel like whenever i wear my hair very big and beautiful, i just feel that pride within me!

for many years, black women have been wearing their hair as it grows from their scalp as a symbol of freedom and liberation, and i too feel that freedom, liberation and confidence when i walk out the house with my natural fro."

FDA To Ban Relaxers Next Month As Cancer Link is Revealed

Almost 90% of black women have used a chemical relaxer at some point in their lives; many of whom began using it as children.  Usage of chemical relaxers has posed significant risks to the health of minority women. Women who use chemical relaxers are often unaware of the health conditions that they can introduce.  They have been clinically linked to reproductive disorders, infertility, cancer and other diseases.   A reporter for the New York Times, Linda Villarosa, spent a significant amount of time gathering facts about the health crisis surrounding chemical relaxers.  Through a lens similar to one idealized by black female epidemiologists, Villarosa discovered the well-researched link between the frequent usage of chemical relaxers and uterine cancer in black women.  These chemically-laced relaxers contain ingredients that act as endocrine disrupters which lead to early puberty and cancer in black women. Chemical relaxers have always been aggressively ma...
